on the afternoon of december 13, 2018, the 7th pumch-hku orthopaedic distance teaching rounds was held. at the rounds were pumch, queen mary hospital (hku), shenzhen hospital (hku), and, for the first time, royal national orthopaedic hospital (rnoh). this time the theme was postoperative distal adding-on in idiopathic scoliosesis. it was chaired by professor zhang jianguo and professor shen jianxiong from pumch and professor kenneth m c cheung and professor wong yat wa from hku.
the rounds was carried out in english, in which four adding-on cases were discussed: two of adolescent idiopathic scoliosesis, one of early onset scoliosesis with magnetically controlled growing rod and one of adult idiopathic scoliosesis. spine surgeons from four places in two countries (beijing, hong kong, london and shenzhen) had in-depth discussions on the mechanism, prevention and treatment of adding-on, which enabled the experts and young doctors present to have a deeper understanding of this complication.
the themed rounds, together with expert discussions and literature review, enabled young doctors to learn related knowledge and topics quickly and greatly benefited the pumch residents, graduate students, other students and hku fellows who were present.
the pumch-hku spine surgery center was jointly established by academician qiu guixing and academician john leong chi-yan. for nearly two decades there have been academic and personnel exchanges. now the rounds is getting better and better, being improved in both form and content, and attracted rnoh to join in. as a top teaching hospital in china, pumch has been striving for an international vision. the orthopaedic international academic exchanges and teaching was part of its efforts towards a goal of building a “world-class hospital with chinese features”.
